This time the First Amendment has been violated by human trafficker Dog the Bounty Hunter. In a voice mail message, Dog used the forbidden word six times in reference to his son’s girlfriend who happens to be African American. Dog, who is not African American and therefore cannot use the forbidden word, has issued an apology, which does seem heartfelt. Also, some might argue that Dog’s comments are distinguishable from the first amendment violations by Michael Richards and Don Imus because this was meant to be a private communication whereas the former comments were made publicly.
I say to you, that the fact that Dog’s comments were made in private does not excuse this crime against humanity. We live in a society which guarantees free speech. However free speech does not give one free reign to say whatever he wants. Free speech is not free when it has costs. Dog’s comments have a steep cost. Dog’s speech carries the cost of offensiveness, and because the speech carries cost, it is not free speech. Because Dog has made speech that is not free, Dog has violated the First Amendment and should be imprisoned for his speech crime.
The First Amendment is crucial to the liberties we enjoy in this country and it must be protected jealously. However, our government shirks its duty to ensure the Freeness of speech. Only our champion speech, the Reverend Sharpton is waging this just battle to preserve the Freeness of speech.
Some are calling for Dog’s firing, as it is a fundamental right to have people fired for offending other people. But I say to you that is not enough. We must ensure the freeness of speech by imprisoning those who would make non-free speech.
It’s like that time in Godzilla vs. Megalon, when the people of Seatopia decided to protest the rest of the world’s use of
nuclear testing. You see, the Seatopians lived underwater. And nuclear testing occured in the oceans. The Seatopians, in order to protest this testing, used Megalon. Megalon was rather unattractive, and looked like a giant cockroach with pointy arms. This form of protest was offensive, and therefore the Seatopians violated the First Amendment. Godzilla, much like Al Sharpton does today, championed the cause of free speech and killed Megalon. But not even Al Sharpton has the political will to kill Dog the Human Trafficker, much less Megalon.
Sadly, our resolve to protect the freeness of speech is lacking in this day and age. Where have you gone, Godzilla?

You are the smartest man I know.
Comment by Annie 1 November 2007 @ 8:49 pmThat is only because you have not met Al Sharpton, champion of free speech.
Comment by brilliance 1 November 2007 @ 9:00 pmI still don’t think Al has anything on you.

Comment by Gabriel... 3 November 2007 @ 3:02 pmYou are a communist, and by the way your article offended me, so should you be locked up for offensive free speech? Where do we draw the line? What if someone tells a blond joke in a bar and a blond overhears it and is offended, should the people that said the joke go to prison? Wake up. But let me guess, you don’t care that Michael Moore makes movies bashing America and its leaders. That offends many Americans, is that ok? Who made the rule that only black people can say the n word, that is retarded. If they hate that word so much they would not say it amongst themselves. Its a damn word. There are many offensive words, oh well. People should not be in trouble for saying a word let alone go to jail. You must be crazy. And you should be careful for what you wish for, if people start getting locked up for offensive speech, then you may get locked up if you offend someone with your articles etc. I did not understand that speech is not free if it has a cost. All speech has a cost. You never said something mean to someone in an argument or whatever. Did that mean thing you said cause the other person to be sad or ruin their day? Well, I guess you should be locked up for that. You are not for free speech, you are against it. Its not selective, what offends some might not offend others and vice versa. Your right Dog did violate free speech, but not by saying the n word (that does not even make sense that would violate free speech, that is paradoxical), he violated it by not standing up for free speech by saying he can say what he wants, but instead he chose to be a coward and kiss everyones ass, which will eventually cause everyone, you included to lose our rights to say and write what we want. So you wouldn’t care if you were not allowed to express your thoughts because they may offend people, you want your rights taken away?
Comment by Jenny 7 November 2007 @ 3:13 pmDear Jenny,
I am not a communist, I am a libertarian in the great tradition of Hillary Clinton and Jesse Jackson. Please stop throwing around offensive epithets before you are arrested for speech crimes against humanity.
Everyone knows that speech crimes are a grave threat to our security, which is why we must guard the Freeness of speech against the incursions of bounty hunters everywhere.
You refer to individual rights. But I ask you, what of our collective rights? Collective rights are more important than individual rights because they are collective instead of individual. You must open your eyes to the necessity of the collective right to the freeness of speech.
If it were not for the freeness of speech, we would not be able to have people fired for offending certain classes of people. And if we lost that power, our enlightened and thoughtful society would lose its power to direct the thoughts of its members.
Comment by brilliance 7 November 2007 @ 4:37 pmYou are crazy, why give the n-word so much power? We treading in to dangerous waters when we start threatening to lock someone up for what they say in a PRIVATE CONVERSATION that was sold to the media. You speak of the “freeness” of speech. Yet,you want hippocrates like Sharpton and Jackson to be the judge. We need so called “Hate Speech” to balance out “Good Speech”. If we deny our society of this basic freedom, we will be no different then these fascist countries whom we fought against in World War Two. I will be the first to say that freedom of speech comes with a responsibility, and the n-word is a terrible word. However, when we start talking about locking people up for using these words we are taking ten steps backward “collectively”
Comment by Steve 8 November 2007 @ 4:32 pmThis is in response to the ignorant post of “brilliance”. Unfortunatley, because you are stupid you have no idea what a democracy is and what exactly it stands for. You want to ban a person’s right to free speech period. There are no rules for freedom of speech. Anyone in this beloved country that you are a part of destroying should be locked up for even suggesting that some words are not allowed to be said. You, Brilliance are a racist. Just because he is white does not mean he is not allowed to use the word “niger” And yes I just wrote that down. I suppose you would believe I should locked up for writing it down? You are America’s worst enemy, you are the kind of person we should fear for the future of our free country. Under your opinion, you are stupid enough to believe that Al Sharpton should be our PC Police Officer. What right does Al Sharpton have that I don’t have as a citizen of this country? The most ridiculous part of your opinion is comparing this whole thing to a Godzilla movie. But, because we have freedom of speech you are allowed to express your opinion. How would you feel if that was taken away from you. You remind me of Hitler. Jenny, a free thinker of the United States of America
Comment by Jenny 8 November 2007 @ 7:45 pmYOU ARE THE SICKEST PERSON. I LIKED TO SEE BANNED FOR LIFE
Comment by Jenny 8 November 2007 @ 7:50 pmYou call yourself a libertarian. The definition of Liberty is, The individuals should be free to act and think as they choose, provided they do not infringe unreasonably on the rights and freedoms of others. You are not a libertarian, you are more of a dictator or facist pig. Get out of our country.
Comment by Jenny 8 November 2007 @ 8:00 pmDear Steve,
You are incredibly right. The forbidden word has tremendous costs, and therefore it is not free speech. Our government schools must do a better job of teaching the youth of U.S. America to only engage in free speech, and NOT offensive speech.
You will see I am right.
Comment by brilliance 9 November 2007 @ 12:24 amDear Jenny,
I AM A TRUE LIBERTARIAN, because I believe in the liberty of people to agree with the majority. And when people like you disagree with me, you are violating my civil liberties.
Do you honestly support Don Imus in his quest to kill everybody? Or Blackwater in their quest to burn down all of California with child arsonists?
Rudolph the Red-Nose-Freenees-Of-Speech-Reindeer would be so upset with you. Vote Hillary!
Comment by brilliance 9 November 2007 @ 12:29 amJenny isn’t “violating your civil liberties” she’s voicing her opinion, theres a difference. Although I must agree she is pushing it and shouldn’t be so immature about another person’s opinions. Although you shouldn’t push it on people or say we’re wrong just because we disagree with you and we’re not violating anyone’s civil liberties by voicing our opinions. People like you and Jenny need to respect other people’s opinions, that goes for everyone. Your opinion is yours and yours alone, if someone agrees with you thats fine, but if someone disagrees that should be perfectly okay too. You both don’t need to lose your head over it.
Comment by Veronica 3 February 2008 @ 3:43 pmAre “child arsonists” people who set children on fire? That’d be cool.
